Zhong Nanshan, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, recipient of the "Medal of the Republic", Professor of Respiratory Medicine of Guangzhou Medical University, Chief Scientist of the national "973" Projects, former President and advisor of the Chinese Medical Association, Honorary Professor of the University of Edinburgh, Doctor of Science of the University of Birmingham, Senior Member of the Royal Colleges of Physicians (Edinburgh, London), and HKU Centennial Distinguished Chinese Scholar, WHO COVID-19 panel member, Director of the National Clinical Research Center for Respiratory Diseases, Honorary Director of National Center for Respiratory Medicine, Director of the Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Diseases.

Academician Zhong Nanshan is a leading figure in the prevention and treatment of bronchial asthma, chronic cough, COPD and major respiratory infectious diseases in China. He has presided over the National 973 Program, 863 Program, Tenth, Eleventh and Twelfth Five-Year Plans, National Natural Science Foundation of China, WHO/GOLD Committee and other major projects; and has published more than 540 SCI papers in international academic journals, including New England Journal of Medicine, Nature Medicine, Lancet, American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Chest and other international authoritative journals in the field of respiratory disease research, with a total of 10,800 citations (H-index 50). In addition, he has published more than 400 papers in national journals sponsored by the Chinese Medical Association and other institutions; published more than 20 monographs, including Asthma: From Basic to Clinical, Internal Medicine (national textbook) and Respiratory Medicine; and obtained nearly 60 invention patents and more than 30 utility models.

He has successively won more than 20 awards, including the Second Prize of National Science and Technology Progress, the First Prize of Science and Technology Progress Award of the Ministry of Education, the First Prize of Guangdong Science and Technology Progress; and has received dozens of honorary awards, including the Bethune Medal (2004), Southern Guangdong Merit Award (2011), Wu Jieping Medicine Prize (2011), Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Prize of CAE (2016), Huang Danian National Teaching Team Award (2017), Reform Pioneer (an important promoter of the construction of China's public health event emergency system), the Most Honorable Striver of New China (2019) and the Medal of the Republic (2020).
