He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Shanxi Agricultural University (1979-1983) and Beijing Agricultural University (1983-1986), and his Ph.D. degree from the University of Oxford (UK) in 1995. In 2003, he was selected as one of the "100 Talents Program" of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and in 2005 was awarded the National Outstanding Youth Fund. He was the chief scientist of the 973 Project and the leader of the "Innovative Research Group" project of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. He has published many papers in international SCI journals (including Cell, Nature, Science, Lancet, NEJM, NSMB, PNAS, PLoS Pathogens, Immunity, etc.). His research interests include cross-host transmission of pathogenic microorganisms, mechanisms of infection and host cellular immunity, public health policy and global health strategy.
