Director of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Institute of CNS Regeneration at Jinan University, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chair Professor at the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine of The University of Hong Kong, Ming De Professor (Neuroscience) of the Ho Fong Moon Yuen Fund, Honorary Director of the State Key Laboratory of Brain and Cognitive Science (The University of Hong Kong), and Co-Chairman of the Board of Directors of the China Spinal Cord Injury Research Collaboration Group. He received his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1977.

A pioneer in international optic nerve axon regeneration research, Professor Su achieved the first successful long-distance axonal regeneration of retinal ganglion cells in adult mammals through peripheral nerve grafting in 1985. His current research focuses on developing pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical strategies to enhance central nervous system regeneration and alleviate psychiatric disorders. Dedicated to investigating neuroprotective and regenerative factors, his work encompasses physical exercise, small-molecule herbal extracts, physiotherapy, and next-generation biomaterials. With over 300 scientific publications accumulating more than 6,500 citations, his contributions were recognized with the National Natural Science Award in 1995. He was elected Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1999 and appointed as a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (USA) in 2015.

Founding Secretary and former Chairman of the Hong Kong Society of Neurosciences, he currently serves on the councils of the Hong Kong Brain Foundation and Hong Kong Association for the Advancement of Science. Additionally, he holds visiting professorships at Peking University Health Science Center, the Fourth Military Medical University, Sun Yat-sen University Medical College, and Shantou University Medical College.
