Professor Shi Yigong primarily employs biochemical and biophysical approaches to study the molecular mechanisms of apoptosis, key membrane proteins, and the structure-function relationships of intracellular macromolecular machines. His groundbreaking work includes determining the architecture of eukaryotic messenger RNA spliceosome core complexes and elucidating their active sites and molecular mechanisms.

His distinguished honors include: the Searle Scholar Award from the Searle Scholars Program, the Rita Allen Foundation Scholar Award, the 2003 Irving Sigal Young Investigator Award, the 2010 Sackler International Prize in Biophysics, the 2010 Qiu Shi Outstanding Scientist Award from the Qiu Shi Science and Technologies Foundation, the 2010 Tan Jiazhen Life Science Lifetime Achievement Award, the 2014 Gregori Aminoff Prize from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the 2014 Wu Jieping-Paul Janssen Award for Medical and Pharmaceutical Research, the 2015-2016 Global Chinese Influential Figures Award, the 2016 Ho Leung Ho Lee Prize for Scientific and Technological Achievement, the 2017 Future Science Prize in Life Science, the 2017 Vcanbio Life Science Award for Outstanding Achievement, and the 2020 Tan Kah Kee Science Award. In May 2013, he was elected as a Foreign Associate of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO).
